Over the past few decades,

the role of faith-based communities has expanded to address a wide range of needs beyond just spiritual care. More specifically, mental health awareness, community developments, and social justice advocacy have become critical to the collective identity of faith-based communities. Closing the Gap is a testament to that evolution. Offering insights, infrastructure and strategies, Closing the Gap sets out to explore how faith-based communities can continue to adapt to meet the changes of the 21st century. The text will teach leaders and lay persons alike how to use the “GAP Model,” a newly developed framework to engage in culturally competent programming and scalable solutions.

Closing the Gap Between Faith and Mental Health

The GAP Model is a trauma-informed, evidence-aligned framework designed to address emotional, spiritual, and systemic barriers that limit mental health engagement among individuals and faith communities.

This workbook offers a structured, replicable approach to assessing community needs, identifying relational and institutional gaps, and implementing safe, measurable, and scalable interventions. It integrates spiritual care with clinically informed strategies to support sustainable healing.

The GAP Model reframes trauma not as weakness or failure of faith, but as a disruption of safety, identity, and connection—providing practical tools to restore dignity, resilience, and communal well-being.
